Back to Titanic

‘You have gift Jack. You see people’ – Rose
‘I see you’ – Jack

A forbidden romance blossoms on an ill-fated ship R.M.S Titanic and the iceberg collision leaves scars of pain, separation and tears in the minds of survivors including Rose. James Cameron’s ambitious dream – Titanic swept the Oscars, making it a nostalgic experience for the movie viewers worldwide. Conceptualizing Titanic’s collision as a backdrop, James Cameron drafted a story of ill-fated lovers – Rose and Jack who cross the path on board R.M.S Titanic. Some reviewers criticized that the romance overshadowed the disaster which claimed the lives of several passengers onboard. For me, the love story onboard Titanic connected with the movie lovers. If it didn’t had romance, Titanic would be no less than a boring documentary.

Even after 19 years of its release, Titanic holds a special place in my heart. What attracted me towards the movie was the lead character – Rose Dewitt Bukater. The older part of Rose was played by Gloria Stuart while the young part was portrayed by Kate Winslet. The 100 year old Rose recounts her memories of the Titanic disaster and the movie rewinds to 1912 when Titanic was ready to make her first maiden journey, unfortunately the last. By a stroke of luck, a poor painter Jack Dawson wins the ticket to board Titanic and the lives of Rose and Jack are destined to meet together.

Though I missed seeing Titanic on big screen, I saw it on Star Movies Channel on 31st Dec 1999. Somewhere I have a nostalgic feeling that I may have boarded the ship ‘Titanic’ in my previous lifetime. Did Rose ever board the ill-fated ship? Was Jack a fictional character in movie? Or was he a real passenger? I had recorded all these thoughts in my 2007 diary. The article on Titanic was my first blog post which I had written before starting my wordpress blog.

People remember the movie for the sensual painting scene. For me, it was more nostalgic because it is the same painted picture of the young Rose which surfaces lots of hidden stories submerged in the ocean of memories. Did Jack survive? It is through memories of Rose that we see Jack the penniless painter who teaches Rose to break free from her chains of aristocracy. In return, Rose unleashes her emotions by posing as a model for Jack’s painting.

The collision spells a doom for these star crossed lovers. What left me in tears was the scene when Jack encourages Rose to start a new life even when he is freezing to death. I hardly see such passion in today’s lovers. Had Jack survived, the story would have been different. There is an old saying that love lives forever in memories and Jack lives forever in memories of Rose.

What live you in memories are the scenes when the violin players keep on playing the instruments even in hour of death. There is another scene of old couple holding each other emotionally on bed in hours of separation.

In the climax, Rose drops the heart shaped diamond locket in the sea and returns back to rest in her bed. The scene then moves in dream where Rose again sees Jack waiting for her on Titanic. They melt in each other’s arms with a kiss. Whether Rose dies or memorizes her feelings is left to the imagination of the viewer.

Sometimes we don’t just watch the movie, we live it. My ears always crave to catch the flute’s sound played in the background. I have revived the memories of Titanic through my words. Someday I hope that in my next lifetime I will definitely meet Rose on a ship. Even if the ship sinks, I won’t let my Rose die.

Remembering madhubala

‘Working in Bollywood makes you famous, dying in Bollywood makes you a legend’ – movie quote

Whenever I saw Hollywood actress Kate Winslet in magazines and movies, I noticed a very strange, uncanny resemblance to yester years actress – Madhubala. If you closely notice Kate Winslet, she had the same smile, shyness and elegance similar to madhubala. Even after several years since her death in 1971, she continues to rule the Indian cinema through her movies and performance. Even Marilyn Monroe couldn’t not match up to her beauty.

In terms of popularity, Madhubala equalled the Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe. The only thing common between Madhubala and Marilyn were their untimely deaths. Marilyn was found dead in mysterious circumstances while Madhubala died due to a prolonged illness of heart. Madhubala was just 36 years old when she passed away. Though today Bollywood is crowded by young charming actresses, but no one has able to bring that larger than life charisma like Madhubala did. Only actress Madhuri dixit was compared to Madhubala. Sadly, there is no biography movie made on life on Madhubala while Hollywood had made several movies on Marilyn.

Born on 14th February, 1933 in Delhi, Madhubala’s real name was Mumtaz dehalvi, a girl destined to rule Indian cinema and hearts of audiences, but ironically she was deprived of love in her personal life. An astrologer had predicted about madhubala that she will grow up to become a popular person in future, earning lots of fortune and fame, but will have a short life span. Despite being diagnosed with a hole in her heart, madhubala started working in movies at age of 8. Slowly with times, Madhubala got her first break in Neel  Kamal opposite Raj Kapoor. Then there was no looking back. She went on to become the leading and successful starlet in movies like Mahal, Gateway of India, Tarana, Mr and Mrs 55, Howrah bridge and the magnum opus – Mughal-e-azam. Though Bollywood gave her stardom, wealth and fame, but this beautiful actress yearned for true love and a happy life which was tragically cut short by her death due to heart disease.

According to news articles and sources, actress Madhubala’s life and career was controlled by her over protective father who never allowed her to lead her life freely. Since she was the sole bread earner of the family, Madhubala sacrificed her emotions to upbring her family. But in the final years of life, she got married to actor and singer Kishore Kumar. Even this relationship didn’t go on a good phase. Kishore Kumar spent a fortune for treatment of her heart disease, but it got complicated since it had reached the final stage.
Madhubala passed away on 23rd February 1969 after a painful phase in her last years. According to critics, Madhubala’s enchanting beauty overshadowed her acting. She was just a eye candy for critics until she proved them wrong by delivering a mind-blowing performance as Anarkali in Mughal-e-azam. Among all the movies, Madhubala looked really beautiful in ‘barsaat ki raat’. Hope this article will be an eye opening inspiration for Bollywood filmmakers to make a biopic movie on life of Mumtaz Dehalvi whom the Bollywood knew by her name – Madhubala.

Titanic – A memorable classic

Scene from James Cameron’s Oscar winning motion picture – Titanic

Hi Folks,

In our day-to-day life, we always gain inspiration from any medium in form of a incident, person, movie or a book. Apart from reading books, I admit that I am very passionate and crazy about movies and film making. I may have seen thousands of movies, but James Cameron’s motion picture – Titanic is my all time favorite . My first article as a writer was for this motion picture – Titanic where I recorded all my memories in my 2007 diary. It was summer of 98, when I first read the review of Titanic in a newspaper and was quite smitten by beauty of Kate Winslet who resembled Bollywood diva – Madhubala. Though I couldn’t see the movie on 70 mm screen, I have seen the movie several times on television. As my name Prashant means Pacific in English, I have strong fascination for ocean and cruise. Sometimes, I feel that I should escape from the stressful difficulties of life and board on a timeless journey where this oceanic liner keeps sailing on and I keep glancing at the heart of the serene sea, gaze at the violinists, salsa dancers, enjoy the party on board and find my Rose someday 🙂 Blissful Isn’t it !! Hope this impossible wish would have been real. But some wishes are meant to stay incomplete in your heart forever.

I remember the every line of the movie so thoroughly that these dialogues are imprinted in my mind forever. Based on the worst maritime disaster, this movie gives you an insight idea about the incident that occurred claiming the lives of several people journeying through this ship . This movie was not only technically brilliant, but also had some memorable performances by Leonardo and Kate winslet. The movie was released in 1998 all over India and ran for several months in Regal fully packed with enthusiastic audience keen to catch a glimpse of the greatest maritime disaster of all times.  Titanic’s  saga was larger than life and is etched in my heart forever. It was the technical brilliance of James Cameron, performances of Leo and Kate and soulful music of James Horner that made this movie an epic in history of Hollywood cinema.

Some memorable lines from the movie

Jack: “I am the king of the world” ………………………
Rose: You jump, I jump
Rose: You have gift Jack, you see people
and Jack says: I see you 🙂

Really it was a masterpiece indeed! My heart goes on and on…………

Awaiting your loving comments
Prashant
